Back to original mission >> Scuttlebutt Sailing News

The emphasis in the United States on scholastic competition conflicts with two variables that can impact the health of sport:

• To avoid attrition, exposure to different types of boating helps a young person identify what they can enjoy in the long term.
• To foster excellence, exposure to more technical platforms enhances learning.

Seeking to address these issues, the USA Junior Olympic Sailing Festival program in 2022 has an updated format, returning to the original mission of capturing the Olympic spirit and introducing young sailors to their next steps in the sport.

Each festival will feature on-water boat demonstrations and on-shore activities for young racers to experience fast, fun and modern boating and learn from industry experts.

Main Festival Highlights:
• Boat demonstrations with modern boats and boards
• Clinical sessions and shore activities for young runners
• Modular format gives participants the opportunity to engage in multiple activities
• Parent education on race courses, Olympic development, college sailing, etc.

The festival series kicks off June 10-12 in Pensacola, Fla., with an inaugural Youth Performance Sailing Festival. This fast-paced three-day event will use a modular clinic format to introduce young sailors to a range of performance boats, including modern skiffs, catamarans, windsurfers, foilers and dinghies.

The USA Junior Olympic Sailing Festival series continues with twelve more regattas across the United States. Each festival will include both traditional course races and the new JO Clinic modules, including boat demonstrations on the water, clinic sessions ashore and other learning opportunities for sailors and their parents.
