Best blue water multihulls: Lagoon 450

Families looking for an ocean cruising multihull should take a look at the Lagoon 450. Toby Hodges and François Tregouet find out why

For those in doubt about the most popular cruising catamaran, it’s a Lagoon – and by far. Over 120 Lagoons have crossed the Atlantic with the ARC in the past five years, three times as many as any other builder (next being Fountaine Pajot at 40). And the Lagoon 450 is an excellent example of a family friendly multihull.

The Lagoon 450 remains Lagoon’s most popular model. It exemplifies the VPLP / Nauta design partnership that has made it the very definition of modern mid-size cruising catamarans that can appeal to families and charterers.

Indeed, the 450 marked the modern look of Lagoon and was the first with an interior styling from Nauta. It was originally launched over ten years ago as a flybridge design with center helm station (450F), before this ‘top sport’ option (450S) was offered with a starboard helm station. and a lower boom.

Over 1,000 of the 450s have splashed since then which, when you consider that over 400 of its 440 predecessor have been built, represents a large chunk of the 45ft catamarans floating in the world! It’s the perfect size, offering enormous volume for family life on board, yet still manoeuvrable.
