Close competition expected at fifth PYC Sailor’s Regatta
SAILING: The Sailors Regatta returns to the Phuket Yacht Club (PYC) for its 5th year this weekend, with races taking place from Friday to Sunday (March 11-13) inclusive.
This Phuket race is a friendly three-day sailing event around Chalong Bay and the surrounding southern islands, and is open to monohull and multihull yachts over six meters in overall length.
“Although this Sailors Regatta is a serious racing event, it will certainly live up to its spirit of friendliness, camaraderie and community,” commented Race Director Warwick Downes.
“We’re all here to enjoy the regatta and to make sure it’s a fun social occasion for everyone involved.”
Registration numbers this year remain strong with approximately 18 registrations expected. Among these are international sailors who have managed to come from Australia and the UK to participate, despite COVID once again hampering the ability to facilitate international travel.
Organizers are hoping for some exciting racing this year with increased, albeit friendly, competition as four boats entered are all of the same Firefly Catamarans class built by Mark Pescott specifically for fast and thrilling cruising in Phuket waters. The four are Twin Sharks, Voodoo, Surf Patrol and Blue Nose and the competition is expected to be very tight.
Matt McGrath will be the Senior Race Director for the weekend and the Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions are posted on the PYC website.

PYC Race Events:
The Sailors’ Regatta is one of three major annual races run entirely by the PYC. It was originally established to provide an alternative choice of racing for its members, to support the local sailing community and to help contribute and support sailing in Phuket. The other two major events organized by the PYC each year include the Multihull Solutions Regatta in June and the Jai Dee Regatta in November. In addition to this, the PYC also supports other regattas across Thailand every year.
