First Look: Nautitech 44 Open – An Ideal Offshore Cruiser

This long-awaited new launch, the Nautitech 44 Open has been designed with private owners on charter in mind, making her an impressive family cruiser.

It’s been many years since we’ve seen a brand new Nautitech catamaran, but it might be worth the wait, the first details of the new Nautitech 44 Open have been released and look impressive.

A very nice mix of volume and performance for a family cruising production cat has seen this new Nautitech 44 Open rise to the top of our wish list of new multihulls to see and sail in the new year.

It took 12 months of development after Nautitech used a panel of existing owners to try to create the ideal owner’s boat, one that fell between their Nautitech 40 Open and their Nautitech 46 Open. While this is a bold move to drop 50% of the market (catamaran rentals) and focus solely on private boats, that’s where the brand’s DNA lies.

The layout of the Nautitech 44 has been designed around the wishes of the existing owners

Coupled with the fact that an increasing number of her owners were moving into deep sea cruising, this led to the realization that a technical room was lacking and that existing owners often closed off a forward cabin to use as storage. Nautitech has therefore developed a ‘SmartRoom’ option in the starboard forward cabin, a multifunctional space that can be a laundry room, workshop, clothes and toy storage.

Marc Lombard’s modern design features curved inverted arches and double chines in the tops. Displacement was controlled and relatively light at 10.5 tonnes, which, together with high freeboard and deck clearance, should help ensure a fast yet comfortable ride.

Whatever your opinion of the stern bars, they undeniably provide a more engaging helm experience because the connection to the rudders is so direct. Emphasis has been placed on ease of maneuvering with a minimum crew and ease of maintenance, including keeping the running rigging visible and accessible. That, and creating an optimized flow through the cockpit and interior.

Contrary to the current trend, the 44 Open features a large chart table, which has a prominent place facing forward. It comes with two to four cabins at a time with two heads.
The first models will be presented in Miami in February and in La Grande Motte in April.
