First Look: Seaquest 46SQ – Yachting World
The Seaquest 46SQ is a light cruising catamaran with a fairly fast pace and capable of generating a significant amount of its own power
The light displacement significantly reduces the amount of energy required to drive a vessel – an important factor in an electric yacht. It’s one of the reasons why Mike Eaton, who has decades of experience building performance yachts, turned to renowned racing boat designer Shaun Carkeek to create his long-range cruising yacht. ultimate term, the Seaquest 46SQ.
The result is this 46ft lightweight cruising catamaran with slender hulls, particularly in the forward sections, while curved daggerboards help lift the bows at high speeds. This produces a fast boat over a wide range of speeds and wind angles.
The less time spent under power, whether in light airs or getting close to the ground to windward at an acceptable pace, the less reliance the vessel has on auxiliary propulsion. Additionally, the speed potential of a lightweight catamaran means that it will reach speeds at which significant amounts of power can be generated using Oceanvolt electric motors as alternators.
According to Seaquest, sailing at seven knots will be sufficient to meet all service and hotel charges – including optional air conditioning – from regeneration.
The improved efficiency of solar panel capacity means there is nearly 3kW on the coachroof and hardtop above the cockpit. Either way, the boat comes standard with battery capacity that gives a maximum range of 73 miles, but at a relatively slow speed. A range extender diesel generator is an option.
The powerful sail plan is configured for easy handling, with electric winches, mainsail sheet, traveler and furlers (including code 0) all available as options.
Accommodation includes three or four cabins with queen-size berths, although there isn’t enough floor space to make those full-level beds. On the plus side, the deck accommodation, where you are most likely to spend time, is spacious.
