In The Lead Video Series Flashback: John Cosker of Mystic Powerboats
John Cosker, owner and founder of Mystic Powerboats in DeLand, Florida, is never the loudest guy in the room. He is gentle and discreet by nature. He doesn’t like much attention, let alone need it.
From building offshore racing catamarans to creating a thriving line of luxury performance center consoles, John Cosker of Mystic Powerboats has had a stellar career – and it’s still going strong. Click on the image above to watch the video.
But he is still one of the smartest guys in the room, and for over 25 years he’s been proving it. A college-educated naval architect with a heady resume that includes working with famed Tom Gentry on the Gentry Eagle project, Cosker was inspired to start Mystic after a visit with fellow maverick boatbuilder, Peter Hledin of the fame of Skater Powerboats.
Although Cosker’s 50ft catamaran made him a household name in the fasting world, it didn’t make him rich. In fact, when the 2008 recession hit Cosker and his wife, Robin, found themselves as two of Mystic’s very few employees. They kept the business alive, while realizing that offering a model – a big-ticket offshore racing catamaran – was not the key to financial security.
LOOK AHEAD WITH JOHN COSKER OF MYSTIC POWERBOATS
This happened in 2015 when Mystic reinvented itself as a builder of luxury performance center consoles – and Mystic’s trajectory has been straight from there. Cosker expanded and expanded its DeLand facility to retain it, only to expand it again last year.
And along the way, he became the 200 mph leading man in the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in American ethanola mystical 50 foot cat of his own creation.
John Cosker is, without question, a true American success story. just look.
