Red-Hot Phantom 30 goes to Key West owner
Whether catamaran or V-bottom, the Stephen Miles Design Painted Medium Speed Boat is well over 40 feet long. But Owensboro’s graphic outfit, Ky. Is it that handle the small jobs between the big ones, and the most recent example – a new 30ft V-bottom from Phantom Boats – is just smoldering.
Next up for this 30ft is interior and engine installation at Phantom in Southwest Florida.
The 30-footer, which will be powered by a pair of Mercury Racing 300R outboard motors, is owned by Jose F. Rodriguez, a longtime resident of Key West, Florida, and among the namesake’s best friends. painting workshop. The two met in 2009 when Rodriguez was building radio-controlled boats and Miles was painting them.
“We hit it off immediately,” Miles said. “I had him and my friend Lance Hoversen build a 70 inch Outerlimits SV 40 RC twin gas motor boat for me. I think we had become good friends before I shook his hand. We’ve been pretty much best friends ever since.

“We talk almost every day on the phone, in addition to texting,” he continued. “The guy just makes me laugh. I don’t care about my shitty mood, just 10 minutes on the phone with this weirdo and I’m in a good mood again.
Rodriguez works for the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority, which is responsible for the fresh water supply in the Keys. His previous boat was a 24ft Specter center console also painted by Miles and powered by a Mercury Verado 350 outboard ‘flashed’ to produce 425 hp. The boat topped out at 78 mph.
“It was my first boat and I really like it,” he said. “I think this boat will be considerably faster and safer for Keys Island Runners events.”
Next week, Rodriguez will travel to Kentucky to reclaim his 30-foot beauty. From there, it will ferry it to Phantom Powerboats in Sarasota, Florida, where company manager Will Smith will install its interior and 300-horsepower V-8 naturally aspirated outboard engines. He expects the job to be finished three to four weeks after delivering it to Smith, but he’s not about to rush it.
“I’m very patient as long as something is done right,” he said.
