zaha hadid architects designs an “oneiric” electric catamaran for rossinavi
a new era of sustainable yachting by zaha hadid architects
Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) is teaming up with Italian yacht builder Rossinavi to conceptualize the recently unveiled Oneiric electric catamaran. Defined by its sculptural, flowing forms and driven by green technology, the solid aluminum catamaran features three tiers of solar panels to enable all-electric sailing and an AI-driven control center to manage power consumption and track battery condition in an effort to reduce environmental impact. With its futuristic concept, the team hopes to establish a “new era of sustainable yachting” that prioritizes the health of the ocean.

The team of Zaha Hadid Architects (see here) and Rossinavi (see here) conceive the Oneiric as a “beacon of green technology”. Three tiers of solar panels are seamlessly integrated into the design to charge a highly efficient battery. On a day trip, Oneiric can cruise up to 100% of the time in fully electric mode with zero emissions. On transatlantic crossings, the yacht can sail in 100% electric mode up to 70% of the time, saving around 40 tons of CO2 (40,000 kilograms) compared to a conventional ship. The solar panels, continuously charging the battery during the day, are also designed for times when the yacht is not in use and when moored can power a family villa ashore.
towards a healthier environment
The multihulls of the catamaran prove to be more energy efficient than the classic monohull of a yacht. The ZHA team explains that this is due to the weight distribution of the shells and their length-to-width ratio which provides greater hydrodynamic efficiency.
The group continues: “This pursuit of environmental sustainability is driven by a desire to preserve the well-being of ocean ecosystems. Rossinavi’s technological innovations and sustainability philosophy are inspired by phytoplankton, a small seaweed that converts sunlight into energy and provides more than half of the Earth’s annual oxygen production. These billions of microscopic organisms remind us that by working together, we can all contribute to a healthier environment.
inside the dreamlike catamaran
‘Oneiric’s exterior and interior design is influenced by the fluidity and dynamism of ocean waves. The sinuous lines and reflective surfaces of the yacht’s exterior continue throughout the interior, blurring the boundaries between ship and sea. The main deck cockpit is comprised of a patio whose walls and ceiling are slightly curved to create a continuity that dramatically opens up views of the water. Going down the stairs to the swim platforms, the area widens further, eliminating walls and ceiling to give a direct connection to the sea.
“Multiple indoor and outdoor lounging and dining areas, as well as a media room with entertainment technology, are integrated into the design, along with a large owner’s suite and four guest cabins. The size of these spaces is exceptional: the master bedroom benefits from a 180 degree view with a composition of skylights letting the light filter in from above. The interior spaces of the yacht are interconnected, a feature that makes the design unique. The owner’s suite gives access to the forward exterior saloon, which can be shaded by retractable structures.
“The visual and tactile characteristics of the materials within these spaces have been selected and arranged to define an immersive environment that accentuates the fluidity of the design. Consideration of weight is crucial to the design of all yachts and for Oneiric, the lightweight interior materials – many of which are recycled and recyclable – were chosen for their energy efficiency and optimum performance.
“Serenity on board is both visual and auditory. Oneiric’s all-electric mode is capable of quiet operations. In addition, the yacht benefits from the effects of Rossinavi Zero Noise technology which isolates all noise on board from the original source. This innovation has been installed on board all Rossinavi yachts for several years. With an already high sound reduction, on this electric boat, the sound insulation will be even more effective.
